The Walls Came Tumbling Down

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Joshua 6

Big truth: God fights for those who trust in Him.
Christ connection: Jesus won for us the best home, with Him forever. Anyone trusting Jesus is made part of God’s people.
Faith Response: Children who know that they belong with Jesus, so they’re not supposed to fit in here.

Memory verse: Colossians 1:13-14 (NIV)
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Dinner-table questions
  1. What was surprising about the way the people won Jericho? What does that teach us about God?
The people didn’t build a boat or make a tunnel: God parted the Jordan river and toppled the Jericho walls. God won for them!
  2. God rescued Rahab from the enemy city Jericho, to live in the promised land with His people. Look at the memory verse – how does God do something even better for those who trust Jesus?
Jesus paid the price to free us from being ruled by sin and turned against God. Jesus bought us back to belong in God’s kingdom of light forever.
  3. Anyone trusting Jesus is part of His kingdom today, but we still live in a fallen world, until Jesus returns to make it new. What’s hard about living in one place while belonging to another? How can God help us?
Discuss the ways we can be tempted to fit in and be just like those around us. When we don’t fit in, we can remember Jesus is our king and he loves us, even when others don’t accept us. Pray for the bravery and comfort of the Holy Spirit to stand out as people of God’s kingdom.
Family activity: stack and tumble

Play jenga, build the tallest lego tower you can, or see how far you can walk with some plastic cups stacked on a plate on your head.

Talk about how only Christ’s kingdom will last, and what it means to build your life on Him.
