City Kids Parent Take-Home
We’re a few lessons into the New Testament in the Biggest Story: Jesus, the long-awaited Snake Crusher and the true Prophet, Priest and King had arrived on earth. Last week the Wise Men recognised Jesus as the true King. This week John the Baptist tells everyone that they need Jesus.
Matthew 3
Big truth: John the Baptist pointed to the point of the Biggest Story – Jesus.
Christ connection: Jesus truly makes us clean and gives us His Spirit
Faith Response: Children who come to Jesus to cleanse them from their sin
Memory verse: Matthew 1:21 song
She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.
Dinner-table questions
- What were some strange things about John the Baptist?
He wore camel hair and ate locusts! - Was John looking for attention for himself?
No! He didn’t want people to praise him; he wanted them to follow Jesus. - Why did John say he wasn’t worthy to untie Jesus’ laces?
John knew that Jesus was the most amazing and glorious person. He knew that he didn’t deserve to be close to Jesus or to even serve him. Yet Jesus didn’t send him away, rather, he used John in this great way. - What’s the same about what John and Jesus did? What’s different?
Both John and Jesus baptised people. However, John only baptised with water and pointed people to Jesus.
Jesus baptises people with the Holy Spirit, cleansing them from their sins.
Family Activity: Three-legged race
Get your shoes on (preferably have at least one person with shoelaces). One person in the pair should ask “Am I worthy to untie your shoelaces?”. The other person says yes and allows them to tie their ankles together. Then they can race another pair (or do time trials).
John the Baptist said he wasn’t worthy to untie Jesus’ shoelaces!
