The Fight of Gideon and the Flight of Midian

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Judges 6-7

Big truth: God strengthens those who know their weakness.
Christ connection: We go our own way, but King Jesus leads us back to God.
Faith Response: Children who don’t follow their way or those around them, but Jesus.

Memory verse: Colossians 1:13-14 (NIV)
For he has rescued us from the dominion of darkness and brought us into the kingdom of the Son he loves, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

Dinner-table questions
  1. What happened over and over again in the time of the Judges? Read Judges ch2 vs 11-12 and vs 16.
The people forgot that God is best and God is king. They turned against God and followed their sinful wants. They got bullied by their enemies. God sent a Judge to deliver them. Repeat!
  2. What do we learn about God from the story of Gideon?
God is forgiving and faithful to his sinful people. God is strong and wins for his weak people.
  3. What are some examples of forgetting God is best and following your own way?
Discuss. We can be tricked into thinking our way leads to life, freedom and joy, but only Jesus does.
Family activity: Tricky leaders

Choose a leader to call out simple actions (e.g. touch head, touch shoulders, cross arms, wave, clap). After a while, the leader should confuse those playing, by doing actions different to their instructions. Those playing should try to copy what the leader says, and not what they do.

The Judges weren’t always good leaders – they often went their own selfish way – and the people followed! They needed a better ruler.
Jesus is that perfect King! He sets his people free from sin’s rule and brings them back to God. Everyone trusting Jesus is made new so they can live for Him. When Jesus returns, they’ll be free from sinning completely.
