The Fiery Furnace

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Daniel 3

Big truth: God’s people should put God first no matter what.
Christ connection: Jesus came to show that God is great and God is with us.
Faith Response: Children who know that Jesus is near when they suffer for him.

Memory verse: Jeremiah 31:33-34
I will be their God, and they shall be my people…
For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.

Dinner-table questions
  1. Why was it hard for God’s people to live in exile in Babylon?
The Babylonians did not worship God or obey His law. They worshipped idols.
  2. Why didn’t Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego obey the king? Why were they willing to go to the fiery furnace?
They knew that God was better and deserved their worship, even if it meant getting in trouble
  3. What did God do in the furnace? When the king saw what happened, what did he realise about God? (See 3:29).
There was a fourth man with them in the furnace and they weren’t burned. Nebuchadnezzar realised there was only one God who could rescue.
  4. How does the fourth man in the furnace point to Jesus?
Like the man in the furnace, Jesus came to show that God is greatest and God is always with us.
Family Activity: stand up

Divide into pairs, ideally in similar heights. Sit on the floor, back-to-back with your partner. Lock arms and try to stand up together without using your hands to push up.

Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego stood up for God, even when it was difficult. We can too, because we know that God is great and He is with us.
