The Way to Stay Free!

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Exodus 19-20

Big truth: God gives His good rules so we an live free lives that reflect Him.
Christ connection: Jesus changes us by His Spirit to live for God.
Faith Response: Children who trust that their loving Creator’s law is good and true.

Memory verse: Ephesians 2:8-10
For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.

Dinner-table questions
  1. When did God give the Ten Commandments? Why does that matter?
After God had rescued His people from slavery in Egypt. It shows that God saves us first, as a gift. God’s commands aren’t a way to earn our salvation, but a way to show that we’ve been set free to live for God.
  2. Why did God give His law? What do the Commands teach us about God? What do they teach us about humans?
God’s law shows us that God is holy, loving and wise. It shows humans our sinfulness. But if you’ve been made right by Jesus and given His powerful Spirit, the law also shows how you can now honour God.
  3. What do the first 4 commands show us about loving God?
God is to be loved most and worshipped alone. Our hearts, thoughts and actions should match what we say we believe about God. We love God when we stop, rest, and remember we need Him.
  4. What commandment were you challenged by today? Let’s ask God for His help to obey Him.
Family Discipleship activity: copycat

Choose someone to be the leader, to do some actions or dance moves. Everyone else faces them and copies their every move, like a reflection in the mirror.

We are God’s image-bearers; we are created to glorify and reflect Him! God’s law shows His people how they can reflect His character.
