Promises Broken and Promises Kept

City Kids Parent Take-Home

2 Chronicles 36

Big truth: God cursed His people for breaking their promise.
Christ connection: Jesus paid for our sin and separation to bring us back to God.
Faith Response: Children who run from temptation and repent of sin quickly, knowing sin is dangerous.

Memory verse: Deuteronomy 32:4 NIV song
He is the Rock, his works are perfect, and all his ways are just. A faithful God who does no wrong, upright and just is he.

Dinner-table questions
  1. How were the people cursed for turning against God? What three things did they lose?
After 1000 years of breaking their promises, the people lost their land, temple, and king. Babylon defeated Judah and exiled the people.
  2. What does this story teach about sin? How is it similar to Adam and Eve in the garden?
Rejecting God meant leaving God’s place. Sin separates us from God and brings death.
  3. How did Jesus deal with our sin? If the curse means separation from God, how does Jesus bring blessing?
Jesus died alone to pay for our sin and separation. Jesus brought us back to live with God, now and forever!
  4. If someone is forgiven by Jesus, can they sin all they want?
No, they belong to God. They’ll always be in God’s family, even when they sin, but sinning stops them from enjoying God and their new life. Sin hurts us and others.
Family Activity: Wait and Go!

Everybody should line up on one side of the room, with one person standing on the opposite side. He/she calls either “Wait” or “Go.” When the caller says “Go!” the players move forward. When the caller says “Wait!” all players must freeze. Anyone who moves is sent back to the starting line. The player who reaches the caller first wins. The caller should take long pauses after saying “Wait” before calling “Go!”

Remind children that even if it seems like God is taking a long time to keep His promises, we can always trust Him. He is patiently working out His plan. The Jews were exiles in Babylon for 70 years before returning to the promised land.
