Dinner-table questions
- How did God work in the story of Esther? What did He do for His people? What did He do to their enemies?
Esther became queen. Moredecai saved the king. The Jews won over their enemies. God turned a day of danger and death into victory and celebration. - Esther risked a lot for her people. How does Esther remind you of Jesus?
King Jesus gave up everything to win victory for His people. He defeated our sin and death so we could celebrate His victory. - When is it scary to stand up as one of God’s people? In those times, what can you remember?
Discuss! It’s wonderful to belong to God, even when standing up is hard. God helps us to be brave, and He uses us when we live for Him!
Family Activity: Who’s who?
Write the names of the characters on post it notes. You need one for each member of the family. You might use: Queen Vashti, Queen Esther, Mordecai, Haman, King Xerxes, King Jesus.
Give everyone a post-it note. Do not tell anyone your character. Going around in a circle, take turns to say one true thing about your character. After your turn, one person can make one guess. Try not to provide to much information; you might say: “I was brave.” “I lived in a palace”. The aim of the game is to guess who everyone else is, without being guessed yourself. The last person to be identified is the winner.
Remind the children that nobody could guess how Esther’s story would turn out. Haman thought he would win, the Jews thought they would die. But God is sovereign and He had a great plan to save His people.
