Amos 5
Big truth: God wants His people to hate evil, love good, and seek justice.
Christ connection: Jesus will make the whole earth right and good. We’ll reflect him perfectly.
Faith Response: Children who stand up for and show kindness to mistreated people.
Memory verse: Isaiah 46:9-10 NIV song
I am God, and there is no other;
I am God, and there is none like me. …
I say, ‘My plan will stand,
and I will do all that I please.’
Dinner-table questions
- Israel was supposed to reflect God to the world, but what had they forgotten? Why was God unhappy with their feasts and sacrifices?
They had forgotten that God is holy, good, and just, and wants His people to be holy, good, and just. They were hypocrites, treating the poor and powerless badly. - Through Amos, God said He wanted justice and righteousness to flow like streams. What did Jesus do to make this possible? What will Jesus do one day?
Jesus perfectly loved God and people, all the way to the cross, where he died for our selfishness and sin. Jesus is changing his people to be more and more just. One day he will make the whole earth right and good. - What people around you do you see are mistreated? What could you do?
