Dinner-table questions
- Why did Abraham and Sarah have to wait so many years after God made His promise, for Isaac to be born? (25 years!)
Waiting was part of God’s good plan. Abraham learned to trust that God was most good. - Sometimes Abraham didn’t trust that God was good, and took matters into his own hands (like giving his wife to other men, and having a baby with another woman). So why did God keep His promise?
God is gracious: He gives what we don’t deserve. God forgave Abraham’s sin and gave Abraham faith. - How does the almost sacrifice of Isaac look forward to the actual sacrifice of Jesus?
God gave a sheep to swap with Isaac. God gave Jesus to swap with us: so that we can be rescued from sin and death! - What are some ways that we forget that God is most good?
e.g. We doubt that God is good when we worry about the future. We doubt God is good when we want or take something we don’t have (envy, stealing). - How would remembering that God gave us Jesus, help us when we forgot that God is good?
God proved His big love for us when He gave His own Son. If God has given us Jesus, our greatest need of all, then He’ll look after us and work everything for our good (even hard times)
Family Discipleship activity: Try not to Laugh tournament
The aim is to keep a straight face, while one person makes funny faces or says funny things to make everybody else laugh. Whoever laughs is “out”.
Isaac’s name means “to laugh”. When Sarah heard God’s promise before, she laughed in disbelief. She thought it was a joke: how could they have a baby so old? But when Isaac was born Sarah laughed again. This time it was thankful laughter that God did the impossible and kept His promise!
The birth of Isaac brought happiness. But whose birth brought even better joy? Look up Luke 2:10-11.
