City Kids Parent Take-Home

Amos 8-9

Big truth: God’s people should worship the God who speaks and saves by loving him and loving others.
Christ connection: Jesus was judged to end the silence and separation, and restore us to God.
Faith Response: Children who invite all nations to be part of Jesus’ kingdom.

Memory verse: Proverbs 30:5 song
Every word of God proves true;
He is a shield to those who take refuge in him.

Dinner-table questions
  1. The people sometimes acted like they worshipped God, but what was going on in their hearts?
They were faking it. Their hearts were far from God. They didn’t really love God and love others.
  2. God was very patient and sent many prophets to the Israelites, but what did he eventually stop doing? How was Israel judged?
Eventually God stopped speaking – there was a famine of God’s word. Israel was destroyed by Assyria.
  3. What did God promise through Amos? Would God stay silent forever?
God promised to restore Israel and bless all the nations. Jesus ended the silence and separation from God. He came to rescue people all over the world from judgement.
  4. Why is it so important for Christians to tell the good news of Jesus all over the world?
Discuss! God planned for all nations to be part of his kingdom.
Family Activity: silent ball

You will need: a ball, or a teddy to toss.

Spread out in a circle. Players throw the ball to any other player, who must catch it. If a player talks at any time, drops the ball, or throws a bad pass, they are “out”. The aim of the game is to stay silent!

Remind the children that because the people rejected God’s Word, God stopped speaking… until Jesus!
