Easter: The Truest Prophet

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Hi Parents! On the run up to Easter, we’re taking a break from our journey through the Old Testament to learn about how Jesus is the truest Prophet, the final Priest, and the best King – in other words, the Messiah, God’s promised rescuer! Sin makes us blind, but Jesus our prophet opens our eyes to know God. Sin makes us guilty, but Jesus our priest took our place to make us right. Sin makes us rebellious, but Jesus our king conquered sin and death to make us his people. This is good news!

Luke 9:18-27 (Jesus foretells his death and resurrection)

Big truth: Jesus is the best prophet! He showed God and still speaks to us.
Faith Response: Children who are shaped by Jesus’ words and share Him with others, confident that Jesus is trustworthy.

Memory verse: Hebrews 1:3a
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power.

Dinner-table questions
  1. What was a prophet’s job? What were the prophets not able to do?
The prophets spoke God’s Word to the people; they warned about sin and called them back to God; they told about God’s great rescue plan. But the prophets couldn’t change anyone’s heart to trust God, and they didn’t live forever.
  2. Why is Jesus better than the other prophets?
Jesus actually carried out God’s great rescue plan. Jesus not only shows us our sin, but cleans us from it. Jesus can change our hearts to trust God. Jesus never stops speaking to us in the Bible to help us live for Him.
  3. The world tells us to follow our own wants and wishes, but only following Jesus leads to true life. What does it look like to listen to Jesus’ words instead of the world’s lies?
    Discuss
  4. Who do you know that needs to hear about Jesus?
    Discuss and pray!
Family activity: hide and seek in the dark

Play hide and seek in the dark, or by blindfolding the ‘seeker’. It’s hard!

Since Adam and Eve, people are born with hearts turned away from God. It’s like being blind and lost in the dark. But that’s why Jesus came, as the light! Jesus showed exactly what God is like (holy, just, loving, good, powerful), especially when he died and rose. What’s more, Jesus didn’t just come for us to know about God, Jesus brings us back to really know God forever, in his family.
