Easter: The Forever King

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Hi Parents! On the run up to Easter, we’re taking a break from our journey through the Old Testament to learn about how Jesus is the truest Prophet, the final Priest, and the best King – in other words, the Messiah, God’s promised rescuer! Sin makes us blind, but Jesus our prophet opens our eyes to know God. Sin makes us guilty, but Jesus our priest took our place to make us right. Sin makes us rebellious, but Jesus our king conquered sin and death to make us his people. This is good news!

Luke 24:1-12, 36-53 (Jesus’ resurrection)

Big truth: Jesus is the forever King! He brought us into his kingdom, beat sin & death, and rules everything for his people.
Faith Response: Children who sacrificially serve others, confident of Christ’s good rule.

Memory verse: Hebrews 1:3
He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the majesty on high.

Dinner-table questions
  1. What was a king’s job?
To be a shepherd for his people (not sheep!) – to look after and protect them, beat their enemies, lead them towards God, and rule them.
  2. Why is Jesus the best king?
Jesus makes peace: he brings sinners (rebels against God) into God’s kingdom, and beat our worst enemies – sin and death. He is king forever, and rules over everything for the good of his people.
  3. When things go wrong in our lives, what can we remember about Jesus?
Jesus is on his throne ruling over everything. He has a good plan and uses even our problems to change us. When he returns, he’ll finally get rid of all struggles, sin, and sadness for good.
  4. How can we lovingly serve others, like Jesus has lovingly served us?
Discuss! What Jesus has done frees us to be kind and generous like he is.
Family activity: origami thrones

Try folding a piece of paper into a throne, following the video tutorial below.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, he sat down on his throne because he had finished his great rescue mission. But Jesus isn’t taking a nap, he’s ruling over everything for his glory and the good of his people. No matter what’s happening, we can remember that Jesus is on his throne, and look forward to when he comes back.
