A Tale of Two Goats

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Leviticus 16

Big truth: God forgives and forgets our sins.
Christ connection: By Jesus’ one sacrifice our sins are fully forgiven and forgotten forever!
Faith Response: Children who are confident that they are forgiven children of God, enjoying Him in prayer, His Word, and His church.

Memory verse: Isaiah 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned – every one – to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Dinner-table questions
  1. Because God is holy and separate from sin, how did He make it possible for the Israelites to live in relationship with Him? What did the animal sacrifices show about their sin?
    Sin is serious and separates from God, but God forgives and forgets our sin through a substitute (swap!).
  2. What happened to the two goats on the Day of Atonement? Why?
    One goat was killed to show that God had forgiven their sin. One goat was sent far away to show that God had forgotten their sin.
  3. How is Jesus like the two goats, but better?
    Jesus is the ultimate sacrifice. Jesus was punished and died in our place, so we never have to. Jesus took all our sin and guilt far away into the grave, to bring us close to God forever. Jesus lives now to defend us when we sin, and is changing us to be more like Him.
  4. What are some of the ways that we can enjoy being forgiven friends of God? (See Hebrews 10:19-25).
    Praying boldly, reading His Word, singing praises, meeting with our church family, talking to other Christians about Jesus, running from sin.
Family activity: far far away

You will need something that disappears, to show your child that Jesus’ death doesn’t hide or ignore our sin, but gets rid of it for good. You could blow up a balloon and pop it, or release a helium balloon into the sky. You could flush a tissue down the toilet, dissolve a laundry detergent sheet in water, or even erase a chalkboard/whiteboard. Write “my sin” on the balloon/ tissue/ laundry sheet/ chalkboard before watching it disappear.

Have you ever worried that God couldn’t forgive you? Maybe you can’t stop feeling guilty about something, or some friends refuse to forgive you. God is different! Jesus’ sacrifice is so big and brilliant, that everyone trusting him is fully forgiven, forever.
