A Fancy Tent and a Foolish Cow

City Kids Parent Take-Home

Exodus 32-34

Big truth: God’s people should worship God the way He commands us to.
Christ connection: Only Jesus shows the true God, who is holy, forgiving and near to His people.
Faith Response: Children who love and trust God above themselves and idols.

Memory verse: Isaiah 53:6
All we like sheep have gone astray;
we have turned – every one – to his own way;
and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

Dinner-table questions
  1. If God doesn’t need a place to live like we do, why did God ask the people to build a tent for Him? What did the tabernacle tell the people about God? [God is holy, He forgives sin, and He wants to be present with His people.]
  2. Why is it wrong to create an idol? [It breaks God’s commandments, it swaps God for a lie, it’s worshipping your own ideas and ways instead of the true God.]
  3. Why don’t we need to imagine or wonder or make up what God is like? How has God showed Himself? [God has made Himself known in His Word, and came to earth in Jesus. Jesus shows that God is holy, forgiving, and near to those who trust him.]
  4. What are some things that people worship and trust today, instead of the true God? [Possessions, like toys, games and clothes. People, like family and friends. Places and power, like being the smartest, coolest, or best at something.]
  5. What’s the problem with loving these things most? Are they trustworthy? How might they let us down? [Discuss how these things will eventually disappoint, fail, be lost. Only God can save and fill us.]
Family activity: Get rid of idols game (pass the parcel)

Find an object to represent an idol (e.g. toy/teddy). Sit in a circle and play music. Pass the ‘object’ to the person beside them. When the music stops, the person holding the ‘idol’ is out. Repeat!
