Dinner-table questions
- In today’s story, people looked at what was impressive (David’s brothers, Goliath), but God chose to work through a shepherd boy. How was Jesus an unlikely, surprising King, even better than David?
Jesus defeated our biggest enemies – sin, death, and Satan – by giving his life on the cross. Like David, Jesus defends us and shows God’s greatness. - In our lives, what sort of things or people can we think are impressive?
Popularity, fame, appearance, having a lot of money, toys or clothes. - What would it look like for us to trust God, instead of being impressed by things we can see?
We would want to know God better, instead of just wanting more things. We would want to show others how great God is, instead of wanting to be the coolest. We would be kind to everybody, not just people who are popular. We could remember God’s love when we don’t fit in, and not feel worried about what people think or say about us.
Family activity: slingshot challenge
Challenge your children to build a slingshot with items from around the house (rubber bands help!). Use a marshmallow or crumbled up paper as the ‘stone’.
Young David went against giant, armoured Goliath with just a few stones and a sling. What did that show about God? Why does God use surprising, impossible ways to win?
God is all powerful: Nothing is too hard for God. He works in surprising ways to show that He is greatest and strongest. All glory belongs to Him!
